Hello all,
This baby has a genetic disorder, called Waardenburg Syndrome, usually associated with eye and hair pigment abnormalities and deafness. In caucasians they have one blue and one green eye, in blacks (african descent folk) you see two blue eyes in a darker skin black person that is uncharacteristic for their coloring or parent lineage. Similar to how albinos are colored differently from their parents coloring. If anyone knows this baby they need to urge them to go to an Academic Medical Center like Washington Hospital Center, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Baylor, Morehouse, Emory etc for assistance and prevention/treatment of the deafness. I went to high school with a guy who had blue eyes, dark skinned, and deaf! I hope this child's parents take the advice of Dr. J Nelson-Outerbridge. apparently she knows what she is talking about!!!

Indeed this child is adorable, but he has a genetic condition called WARRENBURG SYNDROME. This syndrome is only found in African Americans. One of the common signs of WARRENBURG is the White Forlock also known as a gray patch in the hair. Most people born with WARRENBURG are deaf and sometimes mute and deaf. I am African American and I have two(2) children with WARRENBURG but Thank God they are able to hear. JESUS is real.
Why can't this just be GOD's work? All these people with their fancy diagnosis and terminologies. If GOD see's fit he can give someone purple eyes. I think that who ever diagnosed him should have contacted the parents and not exploited them on this Web site. We always find the wrong in things that we don't understand or think that it shouldn't be(especially because he is BLACK with blue eyes). I have family with colored eyes and there is nothing wrong them. Yes he may have this syndrome this person spoke of, but he may just have blue eyes. I know what GOD can do and he is a blessing from on high!!!!

He's gorgeous. My baby is light bright with gray eyes and blond semi straight and curley hair lol!! Her father and have dark brown eyes, black nappy hair, and are dark brown in color. She's 1 so nothing is changing!! Funny how are children can reach so far back regardless of how we look hunh? He's gorgeous. I always say that my daughter was made according to prayer since I got every feature I prayed for including to get pregnant with her!!

Please make note, there are a lot of beautiful black people born with blue, hazel, green and gray eyes to name a few: James Earl Jones, Smokey Robinson, Vanessa Williams, Donny Simpson and more; however, it doesn't mean that there has to be something wrong with them due to this genetical fact and effect. Please be not ignorant of our past history -- of how our slave ancestors were raped. Therefore, it is no surprise if "african-americans" may have a few caucasian traits.
Please be wise, "Africa" be King or Queen, is the "mother of civilization!" To know the world is to know thou self. Please know your history!

I am curious to know why Dr. J. Nelson-Outerbridge stated so definitively that this child has a disorder without knowing his genetic background. As mentioned, there are many healthy A-A celebrities with blue eyes. It is irresponsible to make such a statement without taking the obvious into consideration (DNA). My mother is a little darker than Laren and has bright emerald green eyes, I know green is not associated with the syndrome, but the point is…just because it is rare for it to occur naturally does not mean it is impossible. Plus, I’m sure this child has a competent pediatrician who screened him for the disorder just to make sure. No need to scare the parents.

I think the posts previous posts pointing out that there may be a genetic syndrome underlying this child's eye color were not intended to take away from the child's beauty. They just bring out a possibility that others may not have previously considered, which is that a very likely reason for this child to have such brilliant blue eyes is Waardenburg syndrome.
Also, Waardenburg syndrome does not only affect african-americans as a previous post stated.
Once again, the baby is absolutley adorable.
This is definitely beautiful to see but to all you bible beaters out there who think that it is wrong to point out the medical condition that is being presented is foolishness. Science doesnt have to go against religion. If we know for a fact what this is genetically and some of the adverse conditions that can be associated with it then let it be known. Because when I saw this baby I wanted to know what exactly causes this to happen. But the baby is gorgeous. I hope nothing but the best for its health.

The black celebrities that you name can not be compared to Laren because they are not the same color as he is and they probably have are parents or grandparents that are not black. James Earl Jones, light brown skin and hair and hazel eyes (not like LAREN)Vanessa Williams- blond/light brown hair, biege skin, light blue/green eyes, SO LIGHT SHE CAN PASS FOR WHITE (not like LAREN). Smokey Robinson same as Vanessa Williams- is not dark skinned with kinky hair as LAREN(NOT THE SAME)Donnie Simpson probably has the closest comparison to LAREN, however, still not the same. When you elect to use comparison, they actually have to be things that can be compared. For example, if you were going to compared people who were short, whou wouldn't use Shaquille O'Neal because HE IS NOT SHORT. You would probably use someone like Gary Coleman, Webster, Spud Web....COMPARISONS..If you want to compare other blacks to LAREN then you would have to find a DARK SKINNED,KINKY HAIR LIKE WITH CRYSTAL CLEAR BLUE EYES LIKE LAREN...Lets not pretend that we don't understand the dynamics of how our children usually look. The reality of the matter is that two dark skinned parents usually DON'T have a baby with bright blue eyes! That doesn't mean that we don't believe that GOD can do it, neither does it mean that Jesus is not real! IT'S A GENETIC MUTATION IN EYES.The mutation affected the so-called OCA2 gene, which is involved in the production of melanin, the pigment that gives color to our hair, eyes and skin.
"A genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a 'switch,' which literally 'turned off' the ability to produce brown eyes.
The genetic switch is located in the gene adjacent to OCA2 and rather than completely turning off the gene, the switch limits its action, which reduces the production of melanin in the iris. In effect, the turned-down switch diluted brown eyes to blue.
My husband and I are both African-American with very kinky hair. And as far as we know there is very little other race in our bloodline. We have two daughters and they both have blue eyes. Our eyes are both deep brown.

Who ever left that comment discussing Waardenburg Syndrome is a complete idiot. Its just so amazing to me how people overlook the fact that African's spent centuries in bondage as slaves to the Europeans. Now not only were they beat, and treated like dogs, they (African women) were raped by their white owners which is one of the reasons why some African Americans are very fair skinned with light eyes and blond hair, while others and the majority tend to be more brown pigmented. It all depends on the amount of outsider (meaning not African) blood that you have in you. Baby Lauren's eye color is nothing more than a European jean they he received which made his eyes blue. IT IS INDEED POSSIBLE! I bet if his skin were lighter than his eye color would be more accepted! So get a grip and just accept what is and what will continue to be. He obviously got this jean from one of his parent's; just because a parent is dark skinned that doesn't mean that they don't have a European jean in their DNA that is not prominent in them and cannot be in their offspring. I mean hey, my mother is caramel complected, and my aunt is yellow or "Red" some may call it, and I'm like a brownish/dark orange-ish complexion! And with that being said, the African American race is a race of all mixtures with people of all colors, shapes, and sizes so just accept us for who we are, I mean hey, my African female slave ancestors didn't ask to be raped by their slave "master". r
This baby is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! I had a baby boy on 4/13/08 and he came out light skinned with bright blue eyes even though his father and I are both brown skinned with brown eyes. Do tonight I decided to look for pictures of other AA babies with blue eyes and came across this cutie! He is beautiful, and I think it's rude for someone to come on here and try to downplay his beauty! I wish people would understand that and think about AA history before jumping to conclusions!

I just stumbled across your photos of this little darling yesterday... and posted about him on my own blog today, as a matter of fact!
I am wondering how little Laren is doing these days... has he retained those gorgeous blue eyes as he has gotten older? It is interesting (and rather amazing) that so much time has passed- over 2 years- and we haven't heard any more about this beautiful child. Of course if his parents desire privacy for him and themselves, one can certainly understand and respect that!

Margaret says this baby is absolutely beautiful and is a gift from the Lord. Not because he has blue eyes but because he looks like a pretty healthy baby. Don't believe that anything is wrong with the baby Laren, but the parents can check. Also would like to request that the photographer take a photo of the parents and the baby together it would be nice and answer lots of questions. Would love to see a photograph of both parents together with the baby. The baby seem healthy and very normal thanks be to God. May he continue to grow healthy is my prayer for you all. Clearly you have not traveled the US where many african americans have green eyes or some with blue. This comes from slavery. I mean I am not a doctor and the child may be sick but it is also a possibility that both parents have blue eyed genes in them. Either way he is very cute and hope all goes well
